Care home residents have been reliving some memories as part of a national scheme to save traditional recipes from being forgotten.

Residents at Chandler Court, a Care UK facility on Recreation Road in Bromsgrove, have taken a trip down memory lane following a recent poll that revealed that 65 per cent of adults no longer use family recipes passed on through generations, while 43 per cent want to preserve them.

To counter this, Care UK have released a free downloadable recipe book featuring dishes contributed by care home residents across the country.

The initiative has led the care home's head chef, Alex Millichamp, to add residents' beloved foods from the past to the home’s new menu.

These include 89-year-old resident Betty Daplyn’s lemon meringue cake and 93-year-old resident Bill Spencer's eggs royale dish.

Students from Bromsgrove School helped select these recipes during a taster session.

Ms Daplyn expressed her support for the initiative, highlighting its importance in preserving memories of family and "the good old days".

Tina Lilly, the home's manager, said: "We’ve certainly been whipping up some treats here at Chandler Court as we headed to the kitchen to revisit residents’ food favourites from decades gone by.

“Regardless of age, food plays an important part in all of our lives, and there’s something special about the way the senses have the ability to evoke happy memories and emotions – which is why keeping old family recipes bubbling away is so important."

She added: “Residents have certainly enjoyed re-discovering some of their favourite foods from the past and are delighted that they’re now part of Chandler Court’s new menu.

"Our chefs are thrilled to have put a smile on so many residents faces and helped bring back these wonderful dishes.”
